This month, having conquered the Eastern suburbs, Makin opens a beautiful new store in Newport, (back where she originally started her business).
Plus, there’s a new beach house at Bungan Beach that sets the agenda for beach style. Makin has transformed the former shack into a beautiful one-bedroom oceanside glass box for modern coastal living, which she shares with her husband.
It’s not your usual beach style: there’s plenty of edge where she goes for contrast. Mixing the simple, and the austere with the rough, and the old. Expect lots of textures, subtle hues and natural materials.
Broadly, it’s white walls, black artwork, aged wood, bamboo and muslin lighting, and a lot of raw beauty. There’s a tree trunk gracing the middle of the living room, twisted vine sculptures decorating white walls, Parisian woven pendants, even a frangipani tree.
The extreme contrast of natural beauty with graffiti art, authentic tribal pieces, and a B & B Italia ‘Seven’ dining table is what makes Makin one of the most exciting designers and retailers in town.
Make sure you visit the shop, where you will find the best Parisian jumbo woven pendant lights in bamboo and muslin, from $550. Plus, huge twisted vine sculptures – just the thing to update any space, from $650, as well as black graffiti art, and aged timber tables one-offs (coffee, side, stools) that are gracing the smartest Sydney houses. Also, tribal baskets, Turkish pots, unusual plants, jumbo twisted vines, African Malawi chairs, plus cushions, candle stands.
People come in and say, “I want the lot – and buy everything,” says Makin whose award-winning interiors have appeared in most major magazines from UK Elle Decoration, Marie Claire Italy, Elle Décor Italy to Vogue Living, Belle magazine and a repeat contender of Andrew Martin’s prestigious Interior Design Awards. Visit as soon as you can.
