New trends can whizz around the world in an instant, they can start in any time zone, from any possible geographic coordinates.
For instance, Portugal is a new secret source for fresh futuristic fringing, with shimmy and sway – that brings the joy of movement and texture to our homes with pieces like Manna Design’s Fringe sofa that take the tassel to new heights. Contemporary cane with killer curves is finding itself at the forefront of interiors. Spain and Mexico are producing more cool interior brands than anywhere. American designers and French girls influence us on a daily basis. And yet, despite all of these very visible goings on—Instagram is nothing if not primarily responsible for this movement—you’ll still find that local looks, must-haves, and shopping desires do still differ. Here are the most searched for interior items across the world (and a few things to say farewell to)….
OUT: Silly Strings of Lights
They are overused and just too cutesy looking, plus beware the unflattering glow of exposed-filament bulbs.
MOST SEARCHED: Grown-Up Glow
Outdoor light fixtures with shaded fabrics, randomly placed. Layered, indirect lighting and highlights.
OUT: Inelegant Bulk
Brown, blocky outdoor sofas and chairs with thick frames and heavy weaves in dark colours have had their day in the sun. Hulking, behometh versions of this look in iron are over as well.
MOST SEARCHED: Fine-Boned Furniture
The fading appeal of behemoth furnishings aligns with a newish design approach that treats outdoor space as an extension of a home’s interior. Pieces like the white oak Spindle Back Viewing Chair from Nickey Kehoe’s new Outdoor Collection, that wouldn’t look out of a place in a living room. Light wood furniture with linen upholstery feels resh and relaxed such as Henry Hall Design’s lithe chairs which have been a huge hit.
OUT: Brights and Stripes
Stripes are historical and elegant, but boring, when there are just so many high-performance upholstery fabric options around.
MOST SEARCHED: Discreet Neutrals
Sophisticated, neutral palettes such as Kerry Joyce’s textiles which are the golden standard. Kendall Wilkinson, who recently launched a line of quietly hued indoor-outdoor fabrics, likes to let the landscaping be the star.
OUT: Horticultural Jumbles
Pots with a choreographed combinations of tall, medium and trailing plants and a “thrill, fill and spill” approach to planting are a shopping centre cliché. Zinc planters are out, too.
MOST SEARCHED: Singular Species
Classic terracotta garden pots are always in. Use masses of single plant varieties [in one container] to make a bigger impact and more modern composition. Remember to go, for wide planting widths, too.
OUT: Midcentury Mania
The sort of thin-metal outdoor furniture—some of it cleanly midcentury modern, some considerably fussier (left)—that was popular among chic 1950s folks is losing its appeal, even though the look had a resurgence in 2017. Chicago designer Cari Giannoulias believes that last year’s trend of retro-inspired outdoor furniture missed the mark entirely. “The 50s-style metal lawn chairs were kitschy, and after one season outside generally couldn’t hold up to the elements,” she said. Bent-wire furniture has become synonymous with cheap.
MOST SEARCHED: Unpredictable Wicker
Wrought-iron and bent-wire furniture is being replaced with natural curvaceous wicker that oozes luxury. The secret is to go for modern shapes such as Soane’s modern rippled consoles, desks, wall lights, stools, that looks anything but old-fashioned.
We also reached out to the clever people at fashion search engine Lyst to dig a little deeper on the fashion front and see what’s trending in Tokyo? Does Mexico have its very own MUST-BUY right now? The results of the most searched-for items this year according to Lyst’s data are below. Some might surprise, and some might make you want to up sticks and move to a different country if your personal style appears to be a perfect match. Adam Selman’s hugely successful Last Lolita cat-eyes from his ongoing collab with Le Specs have been seen on celebs, fashion industry girls, and influencers nonstop over the past year, but it’s the Brazilian crew that’s into them the most.
